If SMC Chicago was a five year old, she’d be a kindergartener. One who’s been through pre-school and is starting her first class on her way to completing an elementary education. But, five years in social media is more like 20 or 30 – and school? Learning happens in real time.
We, and the world, have changed significantly since SMC Chicago met for the first time at the Pepper Canister on October 30, 2008.
Thanks to Amber Naslund for finding the place and finessing the early communications that drew folks in. I have to say this has been the fastest, and most event full, five years of my entire life.
I’m honored to be one of the founding members of SMC Chicago and I’m excited about moderating the panel discussion next week with Chicago social media superstars: David Armano, Ramon DeLeon, Kelly Olexa, Ed St. Peter and MJ Tam.

Can you believe it’s been five years since Social Media Club Chicago got its start?
We can’t either, 2008 was so many thousands of tweets ago.
We – and you! – have come a long way since we jammed the Pepper Canister to overflow capacity at our first event.
In five years, SMC Chicago’s hosted over 60 events for thousands of Chicagoans who’ve come together to discuss business, technology, and of course social media.
This month we celebrate all of the people [like You!] that have learned from our events, and met people who have propelled them further into their careers.
On October 22, it’s time to show our appreciation to our members and celebrate at SMC Chicago’s fifth anniversary event. Thanks to Answers Media for hosting us in their uber cool space. You’ve got to see this place!
