Ever wonder how many people really know what online social networking is and how many people participate in social networks?
According to a study by Synovate released by eMarketer, as of April 2008, 23.4% of people in the U.S. participate in social networks. eMarketer predicts that 44.3% of Internet users in the US will belong to social networks by the end of 2008. That’s a 20% increase in only eight months.
Mashable’s take on the social networking stats survey notes that teens – the heaviest social network users aren’t included – and concludes that the 58% clueless number points to a healthy market waiting to be tapped. If eMarketer’s estimate is correct, the surge to join social networks is on – now.
