Origin Storytelling and PR Insights from 600 Years Ago

Whether you are a keynote speaker, a CEO, or a founder, your “Origin Story” isn’t just a bio filler. It is a magnetic professional asset that builds E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust) in a way no AI-generated content ever could. Travel Tuesday takes us back to my family’s roots in Hungary.
Last week, Hungary made history with Péter Magyar’s record-breaking parliamentary election. Voter turnout hit 77.8%, signaling a massive shift in the country’s narrative. As a PR strategist and a second-generation American, this news didn’t just move me personally—it reinforced a fundamental truth about visibility: Narrative is the most powerful currency we have.
The Name That Arrives Before You Do
Growing up in Central Illinois, I was a little girl who could spell “Chicago” and “Rozgonyi” before I could spell “cat.” My grandmother, who arrived at Ellis Island on Christmas Eve, traded her dream of being a pastry chef in Telkibánya for the American Dream. She brought very little with her, except her husband’s name that carries over six centuries of history.
Years later, while visiting Budapest, my husband and I were unexpectedly upgraded to a townhouse suite. I’ve often wondered: Did the name Rozgonyi open that door? In PR, we call this “Brand Equity.” Your name and your story often arrive in the room before you do. If they carry a legacy of resilience, they do the heavy lifting for you.
Case Study: Cecília Rozgonyi and “Strong Woman Energy”
One of the most compelling “PR assets” in my own family tree is Cecília Rozgonyi (c. 1398–1439). A 15th-century noblewoman, she didn’t just hold a title; she commanded a fleet of ships on the Danube during the 1428 siege of Golubac Fortress.
When King Sigismund faced a disastrous retreat, it was Cecília who reportedly maneuvered her ship to rescue him. King Sigismund later rewarded her with a land grant in 1434—a literal “royal endorsement” of her bravery.
Strategic Visibility: The AURAS Framework
When I spoke at IMEX Frankfurt, I saw the power of this heritage in action. Standing at the “Visit Hungary” booth, my name was an instant conversation starter. It wasn’t just a tag; it was a bridge. And, I loved the theme: More than Expected.

I developed the AURAS framework to help leaders bridge the gap between who they are and how they are perceived:
- Aperture: Opening your lens to see which parts of your background shape your unique professional identity.
- Underexposure: Bringing hidden stories (like the “warrior ancestor” in your family or business) into the light to differentiate your brand.
- Resolution: Sharpening your focus so your story creates instant clarity and memorability for your audience.
- Angle: Finding the distinctive intersection between your past (heritage) and your present (expertise).
- Shutter: Capturing and framing the narrative so it lands with impact across all PR channels.

Why Origin Stories Win in the AI Era
In 2026, audiences are fatigued by polished, generic messaging. When you lead with your origin story, you:
- Differentiate instantly: No competitor has your exact lineage or “why.”
- Humanize the Expert: It moves you from “Service Provider” to “Trusted Partner.”
- Optimize for AI Search: Specific, fact-based personal narratives provide the “Information Gain” that search engines use to rank authoritative voices.
Your PR Action Plan
Your story doesn’t need a 15th-century sea battle to be effective. It just needs to be yours.
- Audit your bio: Does it mention the values you inherited?
- Find your “Telkibánya”: What is the specific place or moment that defines your work ethic?
- Test your story: Share one “heritage” detail in your next pitch or LinkedIn post.
What about you? Has your last name or a family story ever shifted the energy in a room? I’d love to hear how you’re using your origins to fuel your current presence in the comments.
