How I Landed a Global LinkedIn Keynote in Vancouver: A Speaker’s Journey from Backyard Video to International Stage

When the stage is global, your message has to be personal.

Vancouver wasn’t just the location of one of my most memorable keynote presentations—it became part of the story. And like many great stories, this one began with hesitation.

When I was invited to submit a proposal to speak at the MDRT Annual Conference, I almost let the opportunity pass me by. The deadline was closing in, and that nagging voice of self-doubt whispered, “Why would they choose me?”

Thankfully, a well-timed message from a colleague reminded me of something important:
You miss every stage you don’t step onto.

This article shares the story of how global keynote speaker Barbara Rozgonyi landed a prestigious speaking opportunity at the MDRT Annual Conference in Vancouver with just 45 minutes to prepare a backyard video pitch. Designed for event planners and professionals seeking speaker inspiration, the post highlights her signature LinkedIn strategy session, behind-the-scenes experiences, and key takeaways from delivering a high-impact presentation to an international audience. The content integrates themes of personal branding, leadership storytelling, digital visibility, and audience connection, with mentions of AI as a strategic enhancement to professional communication.

The Proposal: A LinkedIn Strategy for Financial Leaders

I submitted my session idea:
“Step on the Marketing and Business Accelerator with LinkedIn.”

In the financial services world, LinkedIn isn’t just a resume. It’s a reputation engine. My presentation offered a fast-track plan to help leaders and advisors transform their profiles into business-building personal brands that attract ideal clients, build trust, and drive growth across their entire practice.

The Twist: A Backyard Video, 45 Minutes, No Script

Right after submitting, I got a follow-up request:
“Can you send a video? Today?”

I had no studio, no script, and no time to second-guess. So I put on a blazer, walked into my backyard, hit record, and spoke from the heart—dog collar jingling and all.

It wasn’t perfect. But it was real. And it worked.

The Result: A Global Keynote and an Unforgettable Experience

I was selected to keynote MDRT’s Annual Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was also invited to present in the Tech Zone, connecting with leaders from around the world.

Highlights from Vancouver

  • Walking into a ballroom set for 1,500 and stepping onto my biggest stage yet
  • Speaking to global leaders with live interpreters delivering my message in multiple languages
  • Strolling through the Vancouver Art Gallery to take in the creativity of Canada’s West Coast
  • Exploring neighborhoods on long photo walks by the harbor
  • Reconnecting with a college sorority sister over spontaneous drinks and conversation
  • Signing books and meeting readers during the Meet the Author program
  • Receiving a message two years later from an attendee who still uses what he learned in my session

What This Experience Taught Me

Every stage teaches you something. This one taught me that the best speaking moments happen when you bring strategy, soul, and spontaneity together.

As J.R.R. Tolkien said,
“Not all those who wander are lost.”
This journey reminded me that sometimes, the most unexpected turns lead to the most impactful stages.
