Done. In a click of a link, this blog is now running on WordPress 3.0

Named in honor of Thelonius Monk and released today, WordPress 3.0 follows WordPress 2.9 named after Carmen McCrae. What comes packed in the new version? Here’s a quick roundup of highlights and a video. Please share links and insights so that we can all upgrade and learn together.

WordPress 3.0 Update Highlights

Multi-site Functionality Merges Individual and MU versions
“The most important change with WordPress 3.0 (the ‘Thelonious’ release) is the merge of the individual and multiple-user (MU) versions. The new functionality, called multi-site, will allow blog administrators to manage one or any number of blogs from one install.” via InformationWeek.com

“Starting with Version 3.0, the Twenty Ten theme became the default (and fallback) theme. As described in 2010: A Theme Odyssey, the Twenty Ten theme serves as a good example theme that includes new theme-based features, and looks nice on a public site. Twenty Ten is a community-developed theme. Up to Version 2.9.2, the default theme was the Kubrick theme and was housed in the wp-content/themes/default folder. The Twenty Ten theme is housed in the wp-content/themes/twentyten folder and is the only theme in the WordPress distribution.” via codex.wordpress.org

WordPress 3.0 Custom Posts and Menu Management via Mashable

“You might even want to turn your WordPress site into something more like Tumblr. This will be easy to do in WordPress 3.0 simply by creating custom post types for Text, Photo, Quote, Link, Chat, Audio, and Video. Menu management is one of the most exciting and talked about features in WordPress 3.0. This feature gives you full control over your site’s navigation menus.”

WordPress 2.9 Upgrade Enables Easy Video Embeds

Named in honor of jazz vocalist Carmen McRae, WordPress 2.9 Carmen is the popular blogging platform’s latest upgrade.

Guide to upgrading to WordPress 2.9 from freshworkshops.com.

Installing the latest version took one click. It was so easy I didn’t think to check into what came along with the updates until I opened an email from Matt Mullenweg, creator of WordPress, that outlined the updates as “headline features are global undo/trash, built-in image editor, batch upgrades, plugin compatibility checker, and easier embeds.”

[When I met Matt at WordCamp Chicago in June and told him I was still on version 2.3, I was really embarrassed, but I was also afraid to upgrade and lose data. Thankfully, that didn't happen when I upgraded to the latest version over the summer. Instead, I got a faster, smoother and more enjoyable blogging experience - all in a matter of minutes.]

Matt’s email also included a request to have some eggnog for him along with this preview of 3.0: new default theme, better upgrades, dynamic image resizing, and more, Watch this video for an update highlights overview.

Embedding videos really is as easy as copying the link, which is what I did with both of these.

Blog Redesign Before/After in 24 minutes | Post 650

wprwpreview
Approximately 100 posts ago, I wrote about how I wanted to redesign and rebrand this blog.
Before: All that’s left of my former blog is this screenshot I grabbed from Technorati.
Qualities Before: Messy, unorganized, text-heavy, out dated and totally not reader [or author] friendly.
After: What do you think?
Qualities After: What do you think?

Blog Rebranding Advice: A Before and After Podcast on Post 650

The first post that talks about Wired PR Works’ rebranding. Literally.

Jason Pelker of item-9 Consulting is who I thank for rebranding the blog and for saying yes to my request to be interviewed for a podcast about how he . . .

Untangled 600+ posts from 132 categories and reorganized them into a neat number: 10
Upgraded WordPress from 2.1 [not a typo] to the latest version
Designed the Wired PR Works logo
Combined two themes into one design
Plugged in some cool tools like Widget Logic
Shocked me into taking action [okay, not quite, but Jason actually seemed like he could tackle 20 Blog Redesign Priorities
Kept the project moving at a steady pace
]

Organized, creative, technically-adept and easy-to-work with, Jason is a WordPress design consultant worth checking out. While I’m enjoying getting rave reviews about the new design, especially from friends who love the way Wired PR Works looks on their iPhone, I’m really happy to have a place that feels like home for me – and my readers.

Except for the “this call is being recorded” at the beginning of the podcast and my rambling about this blog’s history at the beginning, you’ll get Jason’sbehind the scenes look at how Wired PR Works was deconstructed, redesigned, refueled and then rebranded.

So, what do YOU think of the new design?

Erin sat next to me – what a lovely and lively young lady! In her presentation, she talked about two sites:

Business Site: ErinBlaskie.com

Alter Ego: ErinGames.com

Becoming an Internet Celebrity by Erin Blaskie

As you maintain relevancy and gain further exposure in the market, your reach will expand further than you ever dreamed.

Internet celebrity is interchangeable with industry expert, industry leader, guru, go to person.

It’s all about the know, like and trust factor – Michael Port.

Once you have credibility online, you can sell anything.

Erin Games uses WP, social media and a World of Warcraft membership.  In about four months, the Erin Games brand had 9.000 channel views on YouTube and 500 YouTube subscribers. Erin got a clothing sponsorship with jinx.com. The site uses Brian Gardner’s Church theme and now ranks at 279,000 in US sites according to Alexa. Erin’s been invited to EA’s offices.

How did this happen? [or how can you, too make this happen?]

- Chose a specific target market that you have knowledge and passion for

- Began pushing content, videos, and most importantly, personality, out to the mainstream community via WordPress and other tools – biggest mistake bloggers make is not putting in enough personality

- Being “cute” was her “little” thing – some people have humor, brilliance, etc

- Partnered with sites that were bigger

- Did live “come & meet me” broadcasts using ustream.tv [first broadcast had 70 viewers]

How Internet Celebritism Applies to You

Expert status for “guru sites”

Check into target markets you may not have explored yet: advertising, YouTube partnerships, etc.

Create buzz and appeal from your market thus increasing sales, visibility, and market appeal

Selling socially works

New promotional opportunities open up that didn’t exist before: media interviews, possible inclusion in books and other written materials, etc.

People will seek you out when you give them reason to – the reason should be YOU and that authentic part of you

Utilize tools and stay current

Generate a long-term following

When you’re leading, you’re doing what you want to do and the money is coming.

Would you want to work with someone who is known or not known at all?

When you blog, blog in your voice so people get to learn about YOU, not just your company or your chosen topic. People that keep coming back appreciate what you’re doing.

Simple Tools to Get Started

Video: about your content area

Social networking: don’t get on and blog about your breakfast, bog content specific things that keep people interested and excited

Blog different mediums: video,

Interweave your efforts, tweet about blog posts, turn posts into articles, turn videos into blogs

Live streaming video: sessions where people can come and ask you questions

Guest bloggers: want tons of great content? invite guest bloggers

Interaction and interactivity: get your community involved through contests, etc.

Get out of your bubble to see what’s “hot”

Who’s your favorite Internet celebrity? Why?

[P.S. My boys and their buddies were very impressed that I got to sit next to someone who blogs about World of Warcraft.]

Micah Baldwin on Building Online Influence WordCamp Chicago

Micah Baldwin started #followfriday on twitter.

Here’s Micah’s presentation – along with my notes. You probably won’t be able to pick up how funny he was/is – his presentation lightened up the room.

How does one build online influence? 3 steps: define, identify components

Influence is the implicit of explicit effect of one thing [or person] on another thing or person.

To be influential, you just have to convince somebody to do something.

Three Parts: Trust, Expertise and Brand

Trust is the creation of an expectation that person A will ALWAYS act as person B expects them to act.

You cannot be trustworthy unless you provide feedback.

Do what people expect you to do.

Branding: an original is always worth more than a copy.

Personal branding, unlike corporate branding, is designed to create expectations about you and your actions. Develop trust with people around you.

The hardest thing in this world is not being yourself. You can’t be that different than who you are.

His thing is succeeding by failure. Company is lijit.

Your personal brand is: Everything You Do Online.

Expertise is the easiest one out of all of them. Knowledge is gained and Expertise is given. You can’t be an expert until somebody tells you you are.

Influence = Reach [Brand*Expertise*Trust]

* reach is a multiplier of influence

All reach is: is a bigger megaphone. If you truly want to be influential online, just influence one person.

How to build online Influence
