Rocks and Ripples

Although this post does not directly address social media marketing or PR, it is my top choice for a number of reasons: it features my son [with his permission], it tells a story, it responds to an inspiring story and it features a video. Everyone I send it to writes back about how they like it. I hope you will, too. Thanks to my son and Tim Sanders for the inspiration.

“You’ve got to go create a ripple.”

Those words came to me as our youngest son and I tromped around the woods. Early in the evening or late in the afternoon, depending on how you measured it, we were doing what we do best: an adventurous young man now, once a boy, coaxing a mom to overcome her trepidation to explore nature and life without boundaries. Where would he lead me if I said . . .

Ending the discussion about whether or not social networks have a lasting place in popular culture and real life, The Social Network won four Golden Globe awards, including best picture.

Best of CES 2011 Innovation Electronics and Connections

Recap from a panel discussion about personal branding for affiliate marketers at Affiliate Summit West 2011 in Las Vegas.
Deciding who to sit with can affect your SOBCon outcome. Your table is your group. This year, I got really lucky.
Six Reasons to Go to Affiliate Marketing Summit

1. People: Meet Marketing Pros
I’ve always wanted to go to Affiliate Summit to learn from people I consider to be the most successful online marketers. Yes, I love my blogging and social media buddies, but many of us/them are more social than serious about business.

2. Content: Learn How to Make Money Online
With over 4,000 attendees in 2010, Affiliate Summit may be one of the world’s largest online marketing conferences. To attract crowds, the content must match what attendees are looking for. In this case, how to make money marketing products, services and information through affiliate routes online.

3. Diversity: Mixed Perspectives
Attendees at Affiliate Summit events break out into five main categories: 12% agencies, 32% affiliates, 17% merchants, 30% networks, and 9% vendors.

4. Timing: Neighboring Consumer Electronics Show
CES takes place January 6-9, right before Affiliate Summit West starts. Tickets to the CES exhibit hall are $100 through December 31, 2010. I applied for a press pass and am hoping to get in to cover some sessions and exhibits.

5. Weather: Las Vegas 58, Chicago 29
Factor in windchill and Chicago could be much, much colder. Subzero is not only possible, it’s probable. Getting out the chill of the windy city in January to go to Las Vegas is a motivator and a no-brainer.

6. Accommodations: The Wynn
Affiliate Summit West will take place at The Wynn, one of the area’s most elegant properties. Most of the more affordable conference rooms are sold out, but you can still find good deals like 5 nights at Paris for an average of $103 per night.

Full disclosure: As a speaker, my registration fee is waived in exchange for preparing and delivering a presentation. As an Affiliate Summit West conference affiliate, I will receive a percentage of registrations made from clicking the affiliate links on this page. If you purchase your ticket after visiting this site, please let me know so I can thank you and meet you in Las Vegas.

Don’t know if that’s his theme song, but that’s the background music in Gary Vaynerchuk’s, Affiliate Summit West conference keynote. I watched it live, took notes and pulled out the highlights. Host of Wine Library TV: Gary Vaynerchuk’s daily wine video blog, Gary talks about personal branding, DNA for you and your community.

Highlights from Gary Vanyerchuk’s 2009 Affiliate Summit West Keynote

Social media doesn’t mean business.

Social media IS a way to communication – just like the fax machine or a pencil.

Everybody uses these differently.

Ideal monetizing mix: 1 hour creation to 8 hours interacting

If you blog or video blog, way too many people are spending to much time on their content.

Content is king, but marketing is queen and the queen runs the household.

Way too many people that focus on putting out great s__. It comes down to the content you’re pumping out and the authenticity. Don’t start over – don’t take second takes. Just produce.

Gary spends 45 minutes to an hour a day max on content and the rest of the time is spent on monetizing with 8-9 hours per day of pure interaction.

Passion + Legacy = Your Brand

A lot of people that do things that don’t look good on their legacy. They do things that they are not proud of, but it gets them clicks and referrals. You got to ask yourself where you’re going.

Do you want to juggle 900 different sites or you do want to create a brand you can sink your teeth into and monetize?

When you build a business around a passion, that’s when you can knock it out of the park. Sink your teeth into what you really want to do. Guess what? We only get to play this game one time – that’s it.

If your business is built on Google, you’re broken. Build Brand Equity Based on Customer Care

When you build brand equity, you can almost never lose it. What happens when Google’s not the player anymore? If you think Twitter is going to be the main place, you’re wrong. Platforms are going to change, it’s how you care about your customers. It’s about how you care about how to take care of your customers. You need to build a business that cares. HARO [Help a Reporter Out, created by Peter Shankman] changed the game.

What happens when you substitute twitter for red, red wine?

Just for fun, here’s what happens when you replace red, red wine with twitter in Bob Marley’s lyrics . . . .

In the Home and Garden breakout session, I heard about the water usage restrictions in California, how Houston doesn’t recycle, what’s going on with sustainability and what secret resources people use to blog better.

Meeting up with Chicago bloggers introduced me to new local connections. The closing keynote was dramatic, inspiring and real.

With four floors of drinks and refreshments, the Macy’s party was fun and ended too soon. Ever the networker, I got cards from people on the escalator on the way out and folks on the street on the way back home.

On the way to the airport, I met Kristin from Crib Ceiling. Sitting here at SFO writing this post, I overheard someone I hadn’t met – yet- at BlogHer talking about how tired she was. “I didn’t sleep, but it was worth it.” I hear you sister. Gotta go – maybe I can still find her and get to know her and her blog.

Cards from fizzy and phenomenal people I met . . . did I miss you? Leave a comment with a link to your blog.
