Chicago’s Master Storyteller Moves On

“Take it easy, but take it.” Studs Terkel, 1912-2008

Chicago’s master storyteller, Studs Terkel, passed away yesterday at the age of 96. If you don’t know his work, I hope you’ll take the time to browse the Chicago Tribune’s  coverage on the life of Studs Terkel. By studying Studs, you can learn a lot about so many things: Chicago, life, storytelling, grace, humor, performing, listening, wisdom, jazz, music, media, radio, romance, politics and humility to name a few. To get a feel for the man in person, here’s a video from University of California’s YouTube channel. Harry Kreisler talks with Studs Terkel, prize-winning author and radio broadcast personality, on an edition of Conversations with History series.

I’d also like to share two personal Studs Terkel stories with you.

The first time I saw Studs Terkel speak, in the early 80s, I was on a date with my boyfriend.

Before Studs came on, my boyfriend took one of Studs’ books out of his briefcase and said maybe Studs could sign it.

After the lecture, we approached the stage together. We talked with Studs for a few minutes and he gladly signed the book.

Studs wrote: Take it easy, but take it.

Those six words stuck with me.

On October 3 2001, I got the chance to see Studs again at an event at the Chicago History Museum.

Studs was obviously older than when I first saw him speak, but his presence was as sharp, spunky and sparkly as I remembered. He talked about his latest book, Will the Circle Be Unbroken? A Reflection on Death, Rebirth and Hunger for a Faith. You can listen to NPR’s Bob Edwards interview Studs about death and dying, really more of an interview about how to live life.

At the end of his lecture, he made his way out to the lobby for a book signing. This time I didn’t have a book and the line was so long it would take at least 45 minutes to talk to him. But, my friends waited. I wanted to tell Studs my story.

When I finally got to the front of the line, I told him we’d first met about 20 years ago – after hearing his lecture on a date with my boyfriend. “We got married and now we have three children. I want to thank for telling us to take it easy, but take it.” Studs smiled and said, “Well I’ll be damned.” He shook my hand and I went home to tell my husband.

Take it easy, but take it.

Six words from a brilliant man of many.

Studs Terkel’s latest book, P.S. Further Thoughts from a Lifetime of Listening, comes out on November 3.

Top PR Blogs to Watch

pr-to-eternity Matthew Watson, who writes From PR to Eternity, recently reported his list of the top 75 PR blogs for October 2008.

His list includes blogs on the AdAge Power 150 with PR, Public Relations or Publicity in the title. He also welcomes reader suggestions. To quote Matthew: “It’s just a bit of fun but I think it’s a decent indicator of the top PR blogs nonetheless.”

I’m sharing the list of the top 25 here with you today so that you can explore new places to read about what’s happening in the PR world. If you have a marketing, advertising or PR blog, you can submit your blog to AdAge Power 150.

Recently, I had the chance to meet Todd Andrlik, blogger at ToddAnd  and creator of the AdAge Power 150. After spending some time with Todd and listening to him talk about PR, I can highly recommend his blog as a must-read. If Todd’s blog were on this list, it would be in the top five.

Online Small Business and Entrepreneur Speaker Line Up

Here’s the list of speakers. I watched the Solutions Stars video teaser and and pulled out highlight notes for each of the featured speakers. Then, I developed a code for the ways I know the speakers: *heard them speak at a conference, @follow on twitter and +met in person.

Key = * heard them speak, @follow on twitter, +met them in person

Whether or not you take the time to watch , you can learn something from the Solutions Stars video conference concept.

What I like about this concept . . .

Channel: Video and live discussions with small business and marketing experts

There’s something about watching these people speak about their passion that engages and intrigues – me, anyway. Reading blogs is one thing. While most of the people interviewed publish top-notch information, seeing them and hearing them talk about what they do validates the relationship and information exchange in a way that reading alone can’t match.

Format: Essential insights about how to be successful online

When you’re doing a brief interview, you have to focus on the key points. There’s no time to set up a story, show some slides or take questions. What you watch is an executive summary in action, basically a line up of interviews that took place at a conference where everyone was excited about sharing their views.

Process: Various viewpoints and consolidation of business thought

Each person brings their own expertise and while they may all agree on an approach, they would probably all interpret and design strategies in their own way. It’s worth taking some time to select a group of experts to follow. Get to know them and find out why they think what they do. Read their book. Take it with you to a conference where they’re speaking. Ask them to sign it and give them a written testimonial about how their book changed your life. Follow them on twitter and become an active participant in their twitter community.

Action: Take steps to online business success

Each expert presents ideas for how to achieve small business success. The key to making them work is to take action. Study how they have become successful: read their works, follow their ideas and see how they’ve achieved influence.

Suggestions if you decide to host an event like this on your own . . .

Name your event – choose a name that attracts attention and buy the domain name right away. Try to avoid confusion with another event or business that has a similar domain name.

Set a date for delivery and write your strategic marketing plan. Then, stick to it.

Schedule video interviews with leaders at a conference you’ll all be attending; mix well-known names with people who might not be as well-known, but are as, if not more, successful. Think: case studies. You can also video people who represent the biggest challenges and have your speakers respond to them.

Buy Google AdWords for the name of your conference and the top speakers to run a few weeks before and a week after.

Distribute a news release for the event and give each speaker a template for their own release.

Collect a database to build a community around the topic.

Title each speaker’s presentation.

Make videos available online after the conference.

Social Media PR Podcast | Baby Boomers Master Social Networking

blogher08-carlos-wendy-barbara

No matter what your age, mastering social networking can be challenging. While teens and young adults might appear to be less self-conscious about setting up online profiles, the one major missing component for many of them is strategy. How do you set up – and maintain – not only an effective online profile, but nurture and grow a responsive community that goes along with it?

Although this podcast is about how baby boomers can master social networking, the basic principles apply to everyone. What’s different for Baby Boomers? Experience, sometimes decades of experience. Moving from shame about becoming older to accepting and valuing life’s accomplishments is a message that Carlos Hernandez, a native San Franciscan and social media consultant, takes to Baby Boomers and the companies who employ them.

A Baby Boomer himself, as am I, Carlos came up with the idea as a result of his personal frustration from being too far behind in terms of technology. The need to explore the world online motivated Carlos to attend the first BlogWorld Expo event in November 2007. We met over lunch at an outdoor cafe and stayed in touch since then. At the time, Carlos was like most of us there – amazed at the possibilities and the ease of connecting in person and online.

In this interview, Carlos talks about how he came up with the idea to help Baby Boomers overcome their fear of expressing who they really are online. Working in layers, Carlos helps them build a profile that releases their attachment to a company and connects them with their best personal qualities. The 22 minute interview also covers these topics:

  • the biggest issues Baby Boomers face when creating online career profiles
  • value-added qualities Baby Boomers bring to the workplace
  • how social media is becoming a new language that requires fluency
  • overcoming ageism by valuing experience

Here are two ways to listen to the interview: right click on the link to save it to your computer or click the play button on the AudioAcrobat player.
