Ezine Article | What Comes Before ABC? | Marketing to Newbies

This article just went out to my Marketing Transformations Network News subscribers . . .

When you explain the way things work in simple, basic and easy to understand language, you keep prospects engaged and on track to buy. Starting with the basics is an approach that works for all marketers, especially entrepreneurs, coaches and speakers.

Breaking down your product or service into a sequence of small steps keeps people interested and coming back, especially when you talk about it from their perspective and not yours. Ask your best customers about how they use your product or service and then use their language to talk to new audiences.

WordPress Business Blogging Video | Be a Niche Celebrity

Here’s a video of Mike Stewart’s presentation at Armand Morin’s Big Seminar in April 2007.

In less than 90 minutes, Mike covers why you need a blog, how to upload audio and video and even what new media marketing can do for you as a niche celebrity.

Thanks to Armand and Mike for posting this video on Google. Many Internet marketing seminars restrict their content to live audiences.

Online Marketing Monthly Survey | Internet Marketing Results

Over the weekend, I got an invitation for a free subscription to Online Marketing Monthly, ”the first professional magazine for the Internet marketing industry.”

The confirmation email sent me to the Online Marketing Monthly blog where I found the results of the magazine’s readership response to this question: “What is your level of experience in Internet marketing?”

According to the survey, newbies and dabblers make up 86% of their potential market. If you’re offering an Internet marketing product, the blog offers a few ways to approach the market.

For the sake of blog space, here’s a paraphase of the top three . . .

1. Avoid technospeak

2. Don’t overestimate your audiences’ technical and marketing abilities

3. ABC and 123 is not too elementary; only advance knowledge when you’re sure they’ve passed a lesson

What’s surprising to me is that these results mostly came from Internet marketers’ email opt-in lists. Given these responses, every Internet marketer should have a basic, entry level product to test response, measure interest and build up to bigger and better opportunities for the both the marketer and their students.

Given that only about 14% of the respondents say they make their living marketing online, there’s a huge gap between ability, time and know-how between the pros and the wannabees.

That’s not to say that Internet marketing isn’t worth pursuing, especially if you want to integrate online techniques into an integrated communications plan.

But, making a million dollars online is about as easy as making a million dollars offline. It takes hard work, perseverance, money, connections and knowledge. No $99 information product is going to magically deposit money in your PayPal account. As with any successful project, you have to take action – in the right direction - to make it happen.

Newsvine.com | Track the News | Make the News

You can use Newsvine to not only read the news, but to make the news, post articles, gather your own community and more. Evergreen, the relaunch, is discussed in a bit more detail at the Newsvine blog.

Thanks to the folks at Newsvine for the following email update.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Much Smarter Front Page
What good is a news site that doesn’t adapt to the way you use it? The new Newsvine front page puts you in control of everything. Want your original Newsvine content at the bottom and your New York Times stories at the top? No problem. Want twice as many headlines? Also not a problem. If you can drag and drop, you can design your own front page in a matter of seconds.
Local Headlines and Weather
You know how when you’re trying to make conversation with someone, you’ll often say empty things like “nice weather we’re having”? With local weather now automatically displayed on your front page, you can now be much more specific with statements like “did you know that according to my favorite site, Newsvine, it’s going to be 78 and sunny in three days?” Furthermore, since we now also display headlines from your local newspaper, you can follow up that with “Did you hear Tom from the fraternity was arrested last night?” It is important to us that you’re as well informed about your city as possible, and that you’re consistently equipped for these precious moments of idle banter.
Newsvine Groups
With over 600,000 people a month using Newsvine now, it’s easy to get lost in this giant news amusement park. Well safety in numbers, we say. Create your own group or join hundreds of existing ones and connect with people who share your, ummm, “original” views on the world. There are groups for left-wingers, groups for right-wingers, and even groups for people who enjoy the music of Winger. Actually, we booted the Winger group, but you get the picture.
Newsvine Live
If you’ve ever wondered what people are doing up to the second on Newsvine, Newsvine Live will tell you. Quite possibly the world’s most thorough and voyeuristic news ticker, Newsvine Live feeds your nascent desire to stare at moving objects on a screen. When you see something interesting float by, just click and you’re off to go read it.
The News in Pictures
Let’s face it. Reading is hard. For those times when you’d just like to pop in and see what’s happening in the world in the form of great photography, the new Newsvine front page photo gallery is there for you. Each photo will actually take you to the corresponding story as well, in case you suddenly decide you’re up for some of that readin’ stuff.
External RSS Feeds
You can now add any news source in the world to your Newsvine front page with just a simple click on the big green “Add News Module” button. From the New York Times to the BBC to Techcrunch, it’s all there just waiting to be added.
All this and so much more awaits you at the new Newsvine. We’ve been working very hard over the past several months to give you the quality, customizable news site you deserve, and we hope you enjoy this huge update. If you do, tell your friends. If you don’t, we’d appreciate it if you’d lie to them on our behalf. Oh, and sorry for the e-mail!
The System Seminar | Ultimate Internet Marketing Education & Networking
In the inner Internet circles, The System Seminar [affiliate link] has a reputation for providing pure content, a professional environment and bleeding edge techniques.
All that’s true, but the approachability and friendliness of every one I met, including the speakers, surprised me. Ego was absent – the only time people talked about how well they were doing was to encourage and motivate me personally.
It worked. I spent most of last week applying ideas, testing tactics and making new connections.
Here’s a link to a post from the first night of The System Seminar. Although I planned to blog live every day, I got so caught up in meeting people, interacting and learning that my laptop didn’t get the same workout my brain did. For 28/48 hours I was totally engaged and deeply immersed.
One of the most memorable sessions of the entire event, for me, was the last hour or so of open mic testimonials and reflections. Listening to these individuals brought the experience alive in a way that only personal stories can – some of their words were my most profound takeaways.
If you’re wondering what really goes on at one of these events, all I can say is you’ll be surprised at how amazing it can be. This time I never expected to meet up with someone who’s words impressed me 15 years ago or my partner on two teleseminars, Christine Langermann.
Going as Marc Harty’s guest was an honor and a privilege. Answering questions at his trade show booth about his best-selling product, PR Traffic, put me in touch with dozens of people in a variety of conversations on a really cool mix of topics with people from around the world. I hope in some small way my answers to their questions helped make their businesses more successful.
As a speaker, I always learn from other presentations. I’m never offended when speakers sell from the platform – even when their over-hyped pitch draws small crowds out in the hallway. Although there was no overt pitching at The System Seminar, it’s tough to cover a topic in 90 minutes. So, it was good to see that many speakers offered continuing education programs at reasonable price points.
After going to several Internet marketing related seminars, I’d rank this one as the best for serious students that plan to take massive action. Experience level isn’t important, but a willingness to move is. You’ll get the tools, the connections and the know-how. It’s up to you to make it work. See you next year in Chicago?
