WordPress Growing Blog List | Wired PR Works Hits #34/100/899,185

Exactly two weeks ago today this blog, Wired PR Works. weighed in at #77 on the WordPress Growing Blog List. At last count, WordPress hosted 899,185 blogs.

Today, we’re in the top half – Wired PR Works weighs in at number 34 on the WordPress Growing Blog List.

When I told my brother about this, he offered to email all his friends and ask them to click like crazy tomorow. I told him not to – because I like the organic effects of watching the numbers go up without my direct influence.

Truth is, no one in my family reads my blog unless I ask them to. I like it that way, more creative freedom [and less censorship!].

As the comments come in, I’m continually flattered by the people who follow me. As a writer who’s written for audiences that total in the millions, I found it strangely painful and uncomfortable to begin a blog and continue to keep posting. After all, most of the time I’m a ghostwriter.

The preliminary piercing pain’s worn off and given way to an exciting energy that’s fueled by being part of a virtual community. Thanks to everybody who finds their way here to read a thread or two. Congratulations to my Growing Blog List  counterparts. You’re  obviously writing something worth reading!

Gary Halbert | Best Copywriter Who Ever Lived

4.19.07  Update

Here’s an excerpt from Gary Bencivenga’s tribute to Gary Halbert . . .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4. Gary was original. His favorite saying, the one he lived by, was “Nothing is impossible for a person who refuses to listen to reason!” With that as his credo, he blazed many new marketing trails that the rest of us followed.
     What does this all mean to you? Let’s sum up. If you want to pay tribute to Gary and what he taught us…
  1. Share valuable news in your advertising and ezines. It commands readership and loyalty.
  2. Be interesting. You can’t bore people into buying.
  3. Get real. Let a human personality shine through your copy.
  4. Be original. But let that human voice be your own or your client’s, not the distinctive voice of Gary, or John Carlton, or Gene Schwartz, or anyone else.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Original Post

Opened an email this morning with a link to this announcement by John Reese about Gary Halbert’s passing.

He’s the copywriter behind the famous “Coat of Arms” sales letter. Often referred to as “The Prince of Print,” Halbert outlined his accomplishments in a letter called “modesty personified.”

Here’s the intro . . .

“I believe I am the best copywriter who ever lived.

Maybe, since you read my newsletter, you too already believe that. Even if you don’t, I think you will change your mind after you read this message.

Here is why.

Much of the direct response advertising I have created is so good it is part of history. My work has been printed in dozens (maybe hundreds) of books. I believe people will still be reading and studying my work 200 years from now. No other copywriter on earth has “winners” that are equal to mine. For example, I once wrote two letters for which I was paid…

$5,250,000!

You read it right. That’s five million, two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. For just two letters. Do you know of any other copywriter who can match that? I don’t think so.”

Read the entire letter at http://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com/newsletters/2006/modesty_personified.htm

Mr. Halbert left a great legacy as a talented, innovative and generous writer – sharing his writing samples online.

Read his work at The Gary Halbert Letter.

10 Ways to Profit |Blog Search Engine Terms | Actual WordPress Stats

Last Saturday, a mystery caller left messages at my office and on my cell phone. She was trying to track me down to thank me for an article. I returned her call, but haven’t heard back. So, I don’t know which one she liked.

Reader feedback keeps you going and on track. Posting to a blog with viewer stats gives you clues to “best-selling” articles in real time. WordPress’ dashboard reports stats on referrers, number of views and click-throughs.

Here’s a list of search engine terms people used to find Wired PR Works yesterday. . .

Click on the image to enlarge it. A week’s worth of search engine terms follows at the end of the article – no numbers, just terms.

Here’s how you can profit from your blog’s search term statistics . . .

- match key search terms to your categories, content and post titles to see what’s attracting the traffic and adjust categories [and your topic coverage] to draw additional viewers

- check your page rank for the search term, if you like the positioning, keep posting and nurture a community

- follow a few experts you like and cover their latest news on your blog with an affiliate link to their products, where appropriate

- chart changes in terms over a few weeks and readjust your writing plans on a monthly basis to add depth and consistency

- respond quickly with updates to most popular stories as they age so they appear fresh, not stale

- when you do a search for one of your search terms and it comes up on the light side, write a post or two and claim the search space as your own if you want that traffic

- promote the charities you support with a donation link, especially when they may not have a high page ranking site of their own

- search other blogs to see who’s writing about the same topics you are, check out their blog, comment on a few posts and then email the blogger to request a reciprocal blogroll posting

- type in the search term and see what else comes up; you may be surprised to find you own an obscure term that could generate some faithful traffic

- use the blog’s search term stats as a traffic estimator for new projects

Here’s my list of search terms from the last week . . .
